Abstract
Objectives£º The aim of this study is to compare characteristics of temperament and character between first-degree relatives of schizophrenic patients and age- and sex-matched control probands.

Methods£ºSchizophrenic patients were outpatients and inpatients in Seoul National Hospital diagnosed by DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criterion. Their first-degree relatives(n=32) and sex- and age-matched probands(n=32) were enrolled in this study. Cloninger¡¯s Temperament and Character Inventory(TCI) and other demographic characteristics were assessed.

Results£º There was a significant difference in educational level between two groups. Among character subdivisions in TCI, total score of Cooperativeness(CO) was significantly lower in first-degree relatives of schizophrenic patients than that in healthy probands(29.06¡¾5.21 and 31.75¡¾4.77, respectively, p=.03). There were no other differences in temperament subdivision other than CO.

Conclusion£ºFirst-degree relatives of schizophrenic patients have lower CO than control groups. This result suggests that first-degree relatives of schizophrenic patients are more intolerant, insensitive, selfish and revengeful. Further well controlled study investigating the characteristics of temperament and character in first-degree relatives of schizophrenia is needed.
